Fifth Third bank does offer a second chance checking now and most people are not even aware of. They are not advertising it from what I can tell. Once an application is submitted online for a regular checking account, the customer will either get an approval or a denial. If you get a denial, you may later get an email that says that you are eligible for the second chance account. Some people have been able to get these accounts but from what I can tell, it has been very few that have stayed opened.
Some people are approved for a regular account and later are told that the account is going to be closed due to Chexsystems and/or Early Warning Services. There have also been some that have opened the second chance accounts to later be told the same thing. It really makes no sense but it happens.
How I wish a bank would either approve or deny a customer from the start and not create situations for people that are hassles and sometimes even a crisis. Having all of your money tied up into an account just to be told later that it is frozen and will be closed is just not fair. The strange things about this happening with Fifth Third Bank is because this is a second chance account. Most of the time, we see this situation occour when someone is approved for an account at a chexsystems bank that normaly would not have approved them for chexsystems issues. There is really no telling why this happens for certain. What we have seen is that some banks have an online application that will automatically approve you and wait to run a chexsystems report at a later time. Then we have also seen bank managers that will approve an account to be opened but later the decision is reversed by the loss prevention department. Some we believe just get lucky and slip through the cracks. This customer initially told me that he got an account at Fifth Third Bank but later the account was closed.
Mary,Yes, thanks for the information. I opened an account at Fifth-Third Bank. I did an online application Friday, and I was contacted by a gentleman there on Monday who said they review all applications by hand. The next day he said my account was approved and I just funded it yesterday. Hopefully, I won't have an issue where it gets closed in a few days (Wachovia did that to me). Again, you offer a tremendous service for people in a great time of distress and need. It's all the more thoughtful with the follow up communication and offers of assistance. I'll be sure to reciprocate your kindness once I receive my banking materials and will definitely spread the word of you and your service.
Thank you,
Antoine

I wish I had read this before I applied there for a business account. The bad part is I submitted all my information online and provided my id and social to an account person. I specifically asked if my personal info would be used to do a credit check or anything like that and she said no. A week later I took my deposit to the bank and sat with another account person for an hour and a half while she re-verified everything I had done with the previous person. One week later after I receive my debit card, I call to activate it and then said I could not because I was on EWS. What a waste of time !
